40-Year-Old Kitchen Remodel on a Budget

The client had received an estimate of more than $40,000 from a kitchen-renovation contractor. Through thoughtful planning, strategic material selections and careful project management, we created a fresh new kitchen with coordinated dining-room cabinetry for an estimated total of approximately $21,000—including a typical design and project-management fee.

The homeowners wanted to keep their existing flooring, so the new design needed to work beautifully with what was already there. Their Colonial-style home is filled with antiques, rich woods and darker colours. Rather than repeating that visual weight, the kitchen was designed as a fresh, clean, bright and happy diversion—a welcoming space that still feels connected to the character of the home.

The transformation exceeded the client’s expectations. She was so pleased with her new kitchen that she joked she wanted to sleep in it!

This project demonstrates what thoughtful design, creative sourcing and careful project management can accomplish: a dramatic transformation for approximately half the original contractor’s estimate.

The dining room was refreshed with custom cabinetry designed to coordinate seamlessly with the adjoining kitchen. The new cabinets provide valuable storage and display space while creating a lighter, more unified flow between the two rooms.

The dining-room cabinetry and its installation were included in the overall project estimate—not added as a separate expense..
